How To Dead Head Your Roses

Dead Heading Roses

Video Transcript

Hi there, welcome to Avery Gardens. My name’s Matt and today I’m going to give you a quick tutorial on how to deadhead your roses.

We’ve got a lovely English Rose here which is a repeat flowerer. This will flower from May right up until October, maybe November if it’s nice and warm but in order to do that we need to deadhead.

How to Prevent Die Back

So here we can see we’ve got a side shoot which has got some flower heads which have gone over, and a lot of people what they’ll do are individually deadhead these flower heads which can result in a bit of die back.

So, if we go over here another lovely rose, we can see flower heads have been removed individually which has resulted in a bit of die back which is a little bit scruffy and it diminishes the vigour of the Rose.

You can see here we’ve got a lovely leader which we’ve deadheaded properly down to a leaf node which is the area of the stem between the leaf where it meets the stem.

How to Stimulate New Shoots

And what that does it stimulates these lovely new side shoots which will carry the flowers later on in the year.

So, we come back to this Rose, it’s a really simple thing to do. Get your stem, go down a couple of leaf nodes, because what you want is a nice strong base, because what will happen if you deadhead two high up you can get a bit of flop because the weight of the flower heads is so much that the stem can’t hold them and they get all floppy.

What you want is a nice goblet upright Rose. So, if we go back to this stem get your secateurs, come back at a slightly at a slight angle, slice the stem just above the leaf node.
If it is warm we may get another side shoot and we should get another lovely clump of flowers like this.
